you can use chlorine, Bromine,Clorox, or copper Sulfate (hot tub)
Any of these can be gotten at the pool store (where you buy pools and hot tubs).

Chlorine is the main chemical it is like a bleach it disinfects the water but can be dangerous if taken in large amounts, it is also used in tap water to kill any bacteria.Hope that answers it.

We use Calcium Hypochlorite as a ‘dry acid’ and Hydrochloric Acid to maintain pH balance after rain.

idk but our pool got cleaned yesterday, and super-chlorinated… That was really hard to practice in!

When you say cleaning your pool, do you mean keeping your water blue?

There are 3 major cleansing systems in the marketplace for keeping your water sanitary.

1. Chlorine. Chlorine is the king. Chlorine comes in many forms, whether you want a Tab, or a stick. for your normal maintenance. You also have Chlorine shock, which is normally a weekly product you would want to add on weekends after the pool has gotten most of its use if you have kids. Chlorine Shock comes as Granular form or liquid form. Chlorine shock in Liquid form is NOT the same as Clorox. For every gallon of liquid shock, you would need 2 gallons or more of regular bleach. Also. when buying granular chlorine <calcium hypochlorite> you need to look at the available chlorine. some products only have 49%, some have 85%, it can be any number, but obviously the higher the percentage, the stronger the chlorine. You use this shock to super chlorinate the pool water to get all the bacteria and other growths out of your water, and you do this once a week, or if you have a huge party, you want to do it that night especially if the pool has seen alot of use. You want to use 1 Gallon of Liquid, or 1 pound of granular chlorine for every 10000 gallons of water in your pool. IF your pool is only 25000 gallons, Round up to the next 10000 mark.

Also keep in mind too that Chlorine Pools also need to checked for their Cyanuric Acid levels. Cyanuric Acid protects the chlorine in your water from the sun.

As for Chlorine sticks and Tabs, in solid form, you should put them directly into your skimmer. Most pools require 3 sticks/tabs a week. Some require more, and some maybe only 2. These should always be kept full…. If after 4 days, you check your skimmer and notice that there are only a few pieces left from the tabs, then you want to add 3 more, the little pieces will dissappear fast so dont worry about overchlorinating the water.

Also, when you empty your skimmer basket with the chlorine in it, make sure you take the chlorine out of the basket before dumping the leaves etc, or make sure you pick them up off the ground.

BROMINE Somewhat effective. Here is something that i encourage people to do. Bromine requires a brominator, which the bromine is poured into and the water passing over the chemical breaks it down and adds it to your water <and you can control the strength>. But Bromine pools also require you to shock your pool. just like chlorine pools, with liquid or granular shock, and the chemical companies wont ever tell you this, But and this is that thing i encourage you to do… Add some cyanuric acid to your water. What you are going to be doing with this is to extend the life of your chlorine shock. Bromine as an unstabilized sanitizer just doesnt cut it. Bromine also affects your PH levels too much as well, and it requires constant regulation.

the 3rd chemical is Baquacil Baquacil <and also known as Softswim from Bioguard> is basically a superconcentrated form of hydrogen peroxide. the system is fairly easy, and it goes on a number or letter scheme. the bottles are marked 1 2 or 3, or if they use letters A B or C, Just follow the directions, you dont use any chlorine at all.. I dont like this system of sanitizer as there are too many variables with regulation of your water, with chlorine or Bromine you can add additional sticks or increase your brominator to add more to your pool, with baquacil you have no control really.
