My swimming pool smells and tastes funny, and chemicals don't help; why?

Next Page - Build your own in-ground pool step by step

My swimming pool is 5 years old and I’ve never had this problem before. Lately there is a metallic smell and taste to it. I took a sample to the pool store, and all they said was it needed conditioner. That worked for two days, then back to the bad smell. I shocked it, per their instruction, then back to the bad smell in two days. Also, it loses its nice blue look, but takes on a paler color. Any ideas?

It sounds like you went to Leslie’s…. I’m not sure if they test for copper, but it sounds like there could be a mineral presence. There is another common cause for an "odor" emanating from the pool and its called chloromines. I’d suggest taking a water sample to a Shasta Pools retail store and ask them to test for "total chlorine" as well as free chlorine. They also test every pool for copper, but make sure to voice your concern about the metallic smell/taste.

I would try the other type of chlorine. The one usually used ends in (hydro something) The other begins with "T". I use the second. They sell it at Academy.

Have you cleaned the filter recently?
There might be something growing in there that
needs to be removed.
(Who’s been peeing in the pool?)
