Do Muscovy ducks make good backyard pets?

Next Page - Build your own in-ground pool step by step

I am toying with the idea of getting 2 Muscovy ducklings. How are they as pets? Will they fly away? Will they totally destroy my back yard (landscaping & grass)? I plan on getting them a dog house with hay for a shelter/bed and a kiddie pool to swim in. What do you think?

Muscovy’s are not the best of pets and can be quite messy and destructive.

But that choice is yours! remember that they can fly so you will either have to clip their wings or take them to a vet and have them pinioned, this entails the removal surgically of their wing tips.

It’s a GREAT idea! Ducks make wonderful pets. It’s best of course to get them as itty bitty babies so they can imprint on you. Spend as much time as possible with the babies. You want them to grow to love you…rather than just seeing you as a food source lol. As far as someone else saying they are messy and destructive..I would have to disagree. I find them to be very loving and not at all messy. Infact…I have a goose living in my apartment lol. If you don’t want them pooping on your porch you can always put duck diapers on them. They work wonderfully (that is what my goose is wearing). But also, their poop will actually help your lawn…Its great fertalizer. If you treat them right they will consider you their momma. So I give you thumbs up on wanting to get some ducks..and Vlad (my goose) gives you two wings up!
